A BRIEF HISTORY

The B.E.A.T project started in 1992, based in Banff Day Service in North Aberdeenshire. The project was designed to provide opportunities for people with disabilities to develop vocational skills and also promote recycling and  conservation.

They began by recycling paper and cardboard which they collected and then sold to the local district council. In 1996 the B.E.A.T project moved from Banff Day Service to the Macduff Industrial Estate where they secured the lease on two industrial units. Banff Day Service Sign

BANFF DAY SERVICES

Banff Day Service was opened in Colleonard Road Banff on the 28th August 1992. The Day Service provides opportunities for people with disabilities to develop social, recreational, educational, vocational and employment opportunities.

The Day Service works very much within the community. Where ever possible community settings are used for activities including the Macduff Arts Centre, Princess Royal Pavilion, Banff Community Centre, Deveronside Social Club and many other local facilities. The B.E.A.T project is a reflection of this policy of  being community based.

B.E.A.T SPONSORS

The B.E.A.T project has benefited over the years from the support of local businesses and the communities of Banff, Macduff and surrounding areas.

Without this support the project would not have been able to expand and grow in the way it has. B.E.A.T sponsors are as important to the project as the people working within B.E.A.T

Sangs Lemonade Company supported B.E.A.T in the acquisition of baling and shredding equipment which allowed the project to increase the amounts of waste paper that it processed.

In 1998 the B.E.A.T project was seriously threatened due to the collapse of the price paid for waste paper and the market in general due to international over capacity. Local businesses rallied to the support of B.E.A.T and agreed in conjunction with Aberdeenshire Council Waste Services to pay B.E.A.T for the collection and disposal of waste paper and cardboard from their premises.

With the increased space and storage facilities B.E.A.T also started to recycle used aluminium beverage containers and plastics. ExxonMobil supported the project in the acquisition of another shredding machine and most recently a plastics granulator, conveyor and cyclic blower.

B.E.A.T now provides training opportunities to 30 people with disabilities, provides a recycling service to over 200 businesses and organisations and recently featured on the B.T Openworld broadband adsl web service to small and medium enterprises.
